Happy Thursday Cousins,
I was talking with a coaching client this week about purpose and sharing that purpose doesn't have an expiration date, but it can evolve over time. If you know me, then you know that I firmly believe Genesis 1:28 is a description of what purpose should look like for us and that we're living out purpose when in all areas of life we're being fruitful, multiplying, replenishing, subduing and having dominion.
We walked through an activity I've always loved doing, which is helping people create a Purpose Statement. It's meant to be a "living" statement that guides how we live and deploy our gifts in a purposeful way, all with legacy building in mind. This isn’t just about personal or professional growth; it’s about aligning our lives with the divine mandate given to us in the beginning.
I want you to start designing your own Purpose Statement. Here's how you begin:
The Hebrew Words and Their Meanings
We can do things with more clarity and excellence when we understand what we're supposed to do. By defining the elements of purpose, we can more clearly live it out. Use the questions to start crafting your Purpose Statement
-
Be Fruitful (פָּרָה - Parah): To bear fruit, to be productive.
- What specific actions can I take to increase productivity in my business or career?
- How can I ensure that my efforts are bearing fruit and contributing to my long-term goals?
- What areas of my life need more focus to become more fruitful?
-
Multiply (רָבָה - Rabah): To increase, to become many.
- What steps can I take to expand my influence and impact in my community or industry?
- How can I leverage my current resources to achieve greater results?
- What new opportunities can I pursue to multiply my efforts and reach a broader audience?
-
Replenish (מָלֵא - Male): To fill, to replenish.
- What areas of my life or business need to be replenished or revitalized?
- How can I ensure that I am not depleting my resources but rather filling them up?
- What practices can I implement to maintain a sustainable and fulfilling life?
-
Subdue (כָּבַשׁ - Kabash): To bring into subjection, to rule.
- What challenges or obstacles do I need to bring into subjection in my life or business?
- How can I use wisdom and strategy to overcome these challenges?
- What areas of my life require more discipline and control to achieve my goals?
-
Have Dominion (רָדָה - Radah): To have dominion, to reign.
- In which spheres of influence do I currently have authority and how can I use it more effectively?
- What steps can I take to expand my dominion and influence in my chosen areas?
- How can I ensure that my leadership and authority are used for the greater good and aligned with my character, ethics and values?
Here's Mine...
This is what my last iteration of my Purpose Statement looks like (I'm actually revising it because things in me and around me are evolving...):
My purpose is to be fruitful in all areas of life, to multiply my impact and influence, to replenish (revitalize and bring life to) the spaces I have access to, to subdue challenges with wisdom and to have dominion within my spheres of influence. I live out my purpose by leading with integrity, building businesses with ethical intentionality, remaining passionate about showing women how to build businesses they desire and live lives they love and forever being committed to doing it all with excellence.
What's Yours?
I'd love to see what your Purpose Statement is! Are you feeling stuck in creating it? No problem, simply reply to this email and share it with me.
Remember, purpose is a boundary: when you understand it, you learn what to do and what not to do. The same way you understand the purpose of a steak knife is cutting meat, not eating cereal, when you understand your purpose to be fruitful, multiply, replenish, subdue and have dominion then you understand how to identify things, people, place, activities and mindsets that either contribute to or detract you from purpose.
Let me know how this helps you!
