Don't Panic. Pivot!

And just like that it's already the middle of January...how's 2025 been so far?

Personally: I've been sick for a week!

I planned us to start Vision Week on Sunday January 20th, but with recovering from the flu and my voice bouncing back from the effect of laryngitis, I still can't talk. I'm bothered that what I planned didn't turn out the way I want, but, I've learned to pivot.

Honestly, to say "I'm bothered" is an understatement--I hate when I take the time to plan things and what I plan goes sideways because of things I can't control. Especially when I've poured the energy, time, money, excitement and vision into making something happen. Disruptions can feel like a derailment.

But as a former perfectionist 😏here’s the thing I've learned: life isn’t about perfection and progress often means pivoting.

Here’s What I’ve Learned About Pivoting

  1. Embrace the Disruption
Sometimes, we fight so hard against what’s happening that we lose sight of what could happen. When my voice decided to take a vacation, I realized I had two choices: wallow in frustration or lean into resting physically and mentally. Pivoting starts with acceptance.
  2. Revisit Your Priorities
A plan that works in theory may need adjustment in practice. (Read it again until you accept it!) I had to ask myself: “What’s truly important right now? How can I still deliver value?” Whether it’s a health setback or unexpected business challenges, a shift in focus doesn’t mean failure; it means flexibility.
  3. Find the Opportunity in the Pivot
Obstacles force creativity. Maybe you’ve faced a delayed product launch or a canceled funding meeting. These moments can spark fresh ideas, better strategies and even connections you wouldn’t have made otherwise. For me, this downtime is inspiring new ways to serve you--ways I wouldn’t have considered if everything had gone perfectly.

Practical Steps to Plan & Pivot

If 2025 isn’t starting the way you envisioned, don’t panic. Pivot! Here are some practical steps to get back on track:

  1. Reassess Your Goals: What still aligns with your vision? What needs tweaking?
  2. Adjust Your Timeline: Pushing back a deadline isn’t failure; it’s strategic.
  3. Simplify Where You Can: Cut out the fluff and focus on essentials.
  4. Leverage Support: Whether it’s delegating tasks, asking for help, or outsourcing, you don’t have to do it all.

As we head into the rest of January, let’s remember that the year is still young and it’s okay if we need to recalibrate.

The best plans are living documents! They grow, evolve and adapt with us.

So here’s my encouragement to you: don’t let the hiccups of today keep you from pursuing the big-picture vision. When life forces you to pause, pivot with purpose. Sometimes, those pivots lead to an even better outcome than you initially imagined.
